  • To involve the community in the build up to 2008 Capital of Culture using hands-on training and education.
  • To encapsulate aspects of the city’s wealth of expression including art, sport,  music, theatre and Liverpool’s unique personality.

  • To give first time visitors a memorable impression of Liverpool and improve people’s perception of the city.

The Merseyside Forum currently has several projects in its portfolio that we wish to use to compliment the developments being made by the Capital of Culture Company for the 2008 celebrations. We have several plans for new sculptural artworks for the city centre as well as the restoration of some of the existing monuments. The main aim of our scheme however is the involvement of the community in all these projects and enabling the everyday people who live and work in the city to have an active role in its improvement. Each project will involve many volunteers from community groups, schools and colleges etc, learning the techniques of carving, lettering, modelling, moulding, casting, mosaic and restoration. In this way we will not only be improving the look and feel of the city as an environment, but at the same time educating the people and giving them the skills and knowledge to continue to add to the vibrant energy of Liverpool’s culture.

Each of the above projects will incorporate a training scheme, allowing people of all ages from schools, colleges and community groups to contribute to certain stages of the work. This will give them experience in the technical skills of sculpture and allied crafts whilst enabling them to contribute to high profile projects that will be around for generations. It also means all the work will be a combined effort of professional craftsmen and ‘real’ Liverpool people, making it a genuine example of the city’s cultural and artistic capabilities.



       The Merseyside Forum has undertaken a project to completely re-design and carve the lost pediment sculptures, keeping within the restrictions of the buildings neo classical style, whilst also representing the city’s current cultural diversity. The restoration will be the largest work of classical sculpture carried out in this country since the last world war however the majority of the carving work will be done in Carrara, Italy. This is due to the lack of skilled craftsmen in England at present and is precisely the reason why we have training programmes set up with each of our projects. Our chief aim is to reinstate these classical skills into today’s society and enable future generations to continue producing artwork to be proud of.  It is hoped that the installation of the work will be followed by a celebratory ‘street party,’ with all the community involved to mark the occasion.

        We wish to re-install the gold mosaic featured in the domed ceiling of the Queen Victoria Monument. The original mosaic was removed when it became unstable after   sustaining fire damage during World War 2. Our endeavour will restore this prestigious landmark to its former glory. We also believe that having more young people actively involved in the physical labour of restoring the monument will help them to improve their appreciation for public artwork, thereby reducing the possibility of any further vandalism to the monument.

        The station itself is undergoing a great deal of refurbishment work in preparation for it to become the new gateway to Liverpool, welcoming several million new visitors to the city over the coming years. We believe an impressive and innovative piece of art work that is carefully constructed and thought out would help to capture the ethos of the station as a destination for travel as well as being an impressive greeting for new visitors to the ‘Capital of Culture.’ The piece itself will be hand carved from solid marble, incorporating some metal and mosaic work, making it a combination of traditional/classical art techniques and modern/contemporary ideology that will compliment the stations’ overall décor.

        We plan to deliver a new sculptural art work for the outside of The Metropolitan Cathedral Using a combination of textures, coupling highly polished bronze metal with glass mosaic, the new sculpture will be an instantly eye catching piece that will be intriguing as well as memorable. The main figure of the ‘Risen Christ’ will be cast in bronze standing at approximately 15ft tall. A spiral of Mosaic will then flow from the base of the statue onto the surrounding floor space depicting choirs of singing children (in reference to “The Cantoria” Choir Gallery by Donatello).

        This project will result in a new monumental landmark for Liverpool in the form of Minerva, the Goddess of War and adopted ‘Spirit’ of the city. In an attempt to produce something that will rival New York’s Statue of Liberty, this giant figure should draw tourists from all over the world to come and marvel at her. The statue itself will be cast in bronze standing at a towering 30ft.


       This is a joint project with a Liverpool artist who has asked us to carve the lettering from the poem “The Pool Of Life” into a white marble plaque for the outside wall of Flanagan’s Bar in Matthew Street.


          St. Anthony’s Church in Scotland Road has commissioned us to design and carve a large stone plaque to commemorate lives lost in the Irish Typhus epidemic. The carving will be a Bas relief depicting several figures with a brief inscription at the base

The Merseyside Forum was founded by Terance McGunigle in 2003 as a direct continuation of the company established by acclaimed sculptor, Herbert Tyson Smith. Tyson Smith and his studio were responsible for a considerable amount of Liverpool’s impressive monuments and architectural embellishment with Martin’s Bank (Water Street) being a prime example. ‘The Forum,’ now lead by Mr. McGunigle, continues to uphold the artistic principles set down by its predecessor. However the fundamental aim of the company is to reinstate classical and traditional artistic skills into the mindset of today’s society by teaching a multitude of crafts using ‘hands-on’ education. It is hoped these skills will then be upheld and passed on by younger generations ensuring they are never lost.

We currently offer classes in sculpture, painting and allied crafts to people of all ages and experience with students being educated on site with professional craftsmen. Courses include Life drawing and draughtsmanship, tempera, oil and fresco painting, clay modelling, mould making and casting with stone carving as a final option.
